Awadifo Olga Kili is a profoundly gifted ,brave and resilient internationally recognized Ugandan poet and chronicler .The poetess is widely spreading her literary golden wings and while her verses are bold and they speak resilience .She wields her pen bravely , her life carving chisel as she responds to the plight of the girl child with the cuddle fist of a mother , fist of resistance . The roar of her voice reverberates the Nyiragongo mountains and trembles villages and hills beyond her motherland, Uganda. TANGA.
Here is hunger famished starving Tanga
Her eyes blink with every ray of the frail sun
in her winter of want.
Clouds are not fertile,
Her belies echo with sorrow and emptiness
pulls away her breathe.
Tanga is dying under the watch of greying day
and scavenging birds
Waiting for benevolence from a Good Samaritan.
Her frame is hopeless and tired.
Her heart dances lazily to the merriment
fleas ready to devour her perishing self.
Worms and greenflies signal her demise
They eat and sup from her festering limp.
Tanga is famishing, starving under our watch
Tanga groans under the stone of sorrow.
Scythe of misery gyrate her mind to madness.
Tanga lost her education and future
Long back to cruel hunters.
Tanga lost her dreams to the haters
Tanga was offered as a child bride.
The fire in her eyes are long gone.
The dance in her heart is fading.
BLACK GIRL.
She’s brave.
Racism and misogyny she encounters
Prejudice she immensely faces
But hardened is her heart
Like a rock in the ground.
She sharpens her intelligence
With focus she puts on forefront
And ambitions evident with resilience.
She grows in wisdom and knowledge
And parts ways with laziness.
Aye! She has won the victory
Out of her great labor
And target to reach glory.
She’s crowned in the full armor
And a plate full of achievements.
SISTER HOPELESS.
Wrinkles of a depressed soul
Are seen with sad graffiti on her face.
Her face and skin beam a cast of dark shadows.
Hopeless!
All she’s left with is a sorrowful look.
She lost her head in myriad of thoughts.
She heaves like a rained wild hen
A sexual slave, a millet acre slave, a punch bag
A body learnt to bend in a millet field
From cockcrow till the birds lay to rest.
Nobody is her pillow to cry on.
Her kingdom,a small round hut
smeared by soil and cow dung.
Her lips chapped and clipped by sorrow and hunger.
Her hope, tears and voice clipped in fear chiseled heart box.
Herself, a village commodity with a price tag
And a permanent life uniform
Marriage exchange for cows and cowrie shells
Plus pots of frothing palm oil and soar milk.
She was traded for few beads, hopeless.
Her cry of bitterness is heaved by wind
And vultures who breakfast her hope are long dead.
Her days are dark and her life is doomed, hopeless.
A rugged life like the rugs she wears
Cracked like the fierce lines of her heals
Packaged anger sweeps through her moods
And with a fiery temper, boiled emotions through her veins,
She rules her children with a fiery temper.
